Chapter 16

We limped to the mustang, Carmen supporting most of my weight on her shoulder as I hopped along. Once the car was in sight, Bo started waving for us to hurry. "Come on! We have to get out here!" he shouted.

Mike came forward slowly with his side by side in his hands, carefully watching behind us. "Is Earl coming?" He asked, eyes scanning. The crackling of burning wood drowned out any noise from the shop.

"No. That…" Carmen paused, searching for the word, "Thing in the mechanic shop got him and ate him." Mike nodded and handed his weapon to Malik, then took part of my weight, and the pair of them helped me to the car.

*Hurts*

"Let's go! Let's go!" Bo yelled, still motioning for us to get in, "I told you nobody should go up there, but you wouldn't listen. Now Earl is dead. Maybe you'll listen next time! She’s coming to finish the job!" Bo pointed and we turned to see the creature moving down the low hill. We tensed, readying weapons.

She went to the burning pine and pulled the tire tool out of it with no apparent effort. Without a glance in our direction she jogged back up the hill into the shop. The door closed behind her.

I sagged against the hood of The Blue Blade and groaned. My leg was still bleeding, so I slapped a hand against it and focused healing energy. The wound closed, and I felt a fraction more alive. Weagle was whining and leaning against me. I looked deep into his liquid brown eyes, filled with so much pain. "Can one of you hold him, please? This is going to hurt, and I think he'll try to run." Malik rushed over and wrapped himself around the dog, hugging him and telling him everything would be okay. I gently put a hand to each side of his warped muzzle, getting licked once for my trouble. Quietly apologizing to him, I straightened the broken bone in his jaw and focused as much healing energy I could. He whined and bucked, clearly in pain. Malik held tight, telling him what a good boy he was, and they would get treats once it was over.

*Hurts. Please no hurt me. Hurts*

There was an ocean of pain washing over my mind through our link. After an eternity, the jaw seemed straight, and the swelling had gone down with the slash on his chest erased. The boy let go of the dog, who bounded away with his tail tucked up between his legs.

"Come on! We have to get out of here!" Bo pounded on the top of the mustang from his seat in the back.

"Shut up!" Carmen yelled at him, a hint of her grandmother's Latin accent creeping into her voice. "These men attacked a giant snake to save people they didn't even know. They saved us." She was breathing hard from running and from emotions. "You don't help unless forced. Just shut up and let us figure this one!"

"Hey!" Bo shouted back, "You don't talk to me like that.
